aria Noonan-McDermott was
born in Donegal but now resides in Leitrim, having spent a large
part of her career in Dublin. She hails from an
artistic and literary background, her mother being a keen artist,
her father, a writer and her sister, a poet. A fashion designer by
profession, she made the decision to go back to college to study
visual arts and then fine art. It was there that she discovered her
own distinct style of painting with knives, which she has continued
to develop over the years.
While advancing her
artistic skills at the University of Ulster she became involved with
performance art and later decided to join a community theatre in
Donegal. She worked there for a number of years designing backdrops,
set designs and costumes before treading the boards herself as an
actress. This, she believes, has given her a deeper insight into
human behaviour, which she has managed to translate onto canvas.
Painting has been Maria’s
passion for many years but it is only since 1991 that she has
exhibited her work professionally. During this time she has been
involved in the renowned ‘Across Borders’ exhibition
and a number of gallery showings, to
much critical acclaim.
Maria’s work reflects her
personality, vibrant, bold yet sensitive. Her subject matter covers
a broad spectrum of representational art through to more abstract
and figurative art forms, depicting the social interaction of people
in and out of their natural environment. Maria paints with powerful
strokes, confidently applying layer on top of layer, enhancing the
quality of light and movement and allowing the texture of the paint
to play an important role in the structure of her pictures.
Maria
generally works in oils, and her paintings measure 24" x
20" approximately. For all gallery showings and
exhibitions, her works are preferably mounted in high quality box
frames under glass. All of Maria's latest
work is currently for sale both home and abroad, and export
sales may be shipped unframed if required.
